Enterprise Florida's February 2011 Trend Watch: The Skinny on Thin Film
Is it the falling cost of raw materials or the rising efficiency in competing technologies that is squeezing thin film? According to Lux Research, it’s both. Crystalline silicon (specifically mc-Si), the prevalent solar module technology, has remained highly profitable due to falling prices for polysilicon and new developments that are projected to raise its efficiency from 14.0% in 2009 to 16.1% in 2015. But some thin film technologies have advantages that may give them the upper leg in the long run.
Lux Research estimates that emerging thin film technologies such as cadmium telluride (CdTe), and copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) are best positioned to stay competitive. In the case of CdTe, it is its unbeatable low cost that will keep it most profitable. For CIGS, it’s the dramatic drop in cost as well as efficiency improvements that will make it competitive. It remains to be seen, however, whether material costs, scalability, efficiency, design or some other factor will matter most in the battle for market share and profits.
Besides its strengths in thin film research, Florida is known for its production capabilities. Some of the notable organizations in both of these areas include:
Mustang Vacuum's (Sarasota) thin-film deposition technologies are designed to optimize the solar cell manufacturing process with excellent uniform coatings, able to be produced in less time and minimum waste of materials.
